| Ecosystem | What to compare | Before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Model and API ecosystem | Evaluate a specific model for your text, coding, multimodal, or audio task. | Distinguish ChatGPT product access from API access and record the exact model and tools. |
| Gemini Google model family and API | Check the specific Gemini model against the input modalities and tools your workflow needs. | Confirm model status, supported features, and access in the product or API you will use. |
| Claude Anthropic model family and products | Evaluate a named Claude model on your coding, analysis, or document workflow. | Separate the Claude app, coding tools, and API; available capabilities and billing differ. |
| Kimi Moonshot AI model family and API | Inspect the Kimi model list and evaluate the model and tool features needed by your application. | Record the exact model, supported inputs, endpoint, and current account access. |
| ElevenLabs Speech and agent platform | Evaluate transcription, speech generation, or a complete voice-agent workflow as separate choices. | Assess pronunciation, turn-taking, grounding, and full conversation cost. |
| Ollama Model runtime and cloud access | Run supported models locally or use cloud models, depending on your configuration. | Identify where inference runs. Inspect hardware needs, model license, and any cloud dependencies. |
OpenAI, Gemini, Claude, Kimi, ElevenLabs, and Ollama all appear in discussions about building with AI. They are not six interchangeable models. Before comparing a price or a demo, identify the layer you intend to choose.
This is a documentation-based decision guide checked on 26 October 2026. It does not rank model intelligence or report hands-on results. Model versions and product access change, so follow the linked catalogs when planning a build.
Compare a task and a specific model
For OpenAI, Gemini, Claude, and Kimi, choose an exact model and an access route before running a comparison. A brand name can cover several models, a consumer application, developer APIs, and additional tools.
For example, a support-ticket classifier needs clear category decisions and valid records. A document assistant needs supported answers and inspectable evidence. A coding workflow needs a relevant implementation and meaningful validation. Those tasks need different acceptance criteria.
Keep the same inputs, expected behavior, and review method. Do not compare one provider's smallest model with another's larger reasoning model and present the result as a brand-wide verdict.
OpenAI: select the model and the tools
OpenAI's model-selection documentation distinguishes options for demanding work, complex tasks with cost considerations, and scoped high-volume work. Use the current catalog to choose the specific model and supported features for your application.
Record whether you are evaluating ChatGPT, a coding product, or an API integration. A product can add tools and workflow behavior around a model; an API model alone does not reproduce that whole experience.
Read OpenAI's model-selection guide.
Gemini: verify the supported input and model status
Google's Gemini API catalog describes a range of models and capabilities. Check the exact entry for supported inputs, tools, lifecycle status, and restrictions relevant to your project.
If your task includes documents, images, audio, or video, test the material you actually intend to process. A model supporting a modality does not establish that it handles your particular format or long input correctly.
Read the Gemini API model catalog.
Claude: distinguish the model from its working environment
Anthropic's catalog identifies Claude models and provides model-selection, versioning, and lifecycle resources. Use it to record an exact candidate rather than writing Claude as the complete configuration.
A coding assistant or managed agent can add an execution environment and tools. Evaluate those product behaviors separately from a narrow language-model task. For a code change, retain the diff, setup, and validation evidence.
Read the Claude model overview.
Kimi: inspect the model list and API workflow
Kimi's developer platform supplies model documentation and guides for capabilities such as conversations, structured outputs, and tool workflows. Confirm support on the specific model you plan to use.
For a document task, record what information you send and how the application prepares it. A large context allowance does not prove that an answer finds the relevant passage or cites it correctly. Use an unknown-answer case alongside questions with known evidence.
ElevenLabs: decide which part of voice you need
Transcription converts audio to text. Speech generation converts text to audio. A complete voice-agent platform also coordinates conversation behavior, instructions, tools, and knowledge.
ElevenLabs' agent documentation covers configuration and deployment for that broader workflow. Choose whether you are evaluating a speech component or the complete agent before comparing it with another product.
Read the ElevenAgents overview. For a platform decision, see ElevenLabs vs Vapi vs Retell.
Ollama: the runtime is not the model
Ollama can run supported models locally and also offers cloud access. A comparison that says Ollama versus Claude is incomplete until it names the model and identifies where inference runs.
Local operation introduces hardware and runtime requirements. Cloud operation introduces a remote service and its access conditions. Do not assume that every use of Ollama is offline or that every model in its ecosystem fits your computer.
Check the model's license and requirements separately from the runtime. Record the model name, version or tag, configuration, and the hardware used for a local trial.
Read Ollama's quickstart and cloud documentation.
Make a small, reproducible shortlist
Choose two candidates at the same layer. For a model task, compare named models with the same test set. For a voice agent, compare the full conversation. For a local deployment decision, compare quality and operations on hardware you can actually use.
Record correctness, failure behavior, latency, service spend, and manual correction effort. Leave unavailable measurements blank. A documented feature is not a measured result, and a trial result applies to the tested configuration rather than an entire brand.
