What is prompt engineering?

Prompt engineering is the practice of designing, structuring, and iterating on inputs to large language models (LLMs) so that they reliably produce the outputs you want. A good prompt makes your intent unambiguous, constrains the model to the right role, and clearly defines what a 'good answer' looks like.

You can think of it as a mix of UX design (for the model), API design (your contract with the model), and software engineering (breaking complex tasks into smaller ones and testing them).

Why is prompt engineering important now?
